Teacher and author (SENIORITIS) Tate Thompson hosted Chris Crutcher and Terry Davis at his Junction City High School the same season his firstborn son, Hogan, was born.

Houghton Lake handed Chris Crutcher a very clever author basket, inspired by "Telephone Man," a short story from ATHLETIC SHORTS. They also gave him a well planned string of author visit days.

Chris visited Eau Claire, Wisconsin in March of 2003. Memorial High School's remarkable Teen Literacy Initiative (headed up by Pam Gardow who provided these photos) not only welcomed Chris as a guest, they worked with the L.E. Phillips Memorial Public Library to be sure CC books would be available for sale after his library event. We thank Pam for sharing these great pictures and congratulate her and her student partners on the success of this amazing program.

When the American Library Association had their convention in Toronto in 2003, Crutcher ignored the SARS panic and attended for at least two reasons. One, he's not driven by fear and two, he wanted to participate in the ALA's "Chris Crutcher Fun Run." This photo shows Crutcher, #1, on his way to a very respectable time -- 5th all-around.

Chris spent an action filled day in Kent, Washington at Kent Lake High School thanks to the hard work of Sandra Cato. School assemblies, classroom discussions and a public auditorium event were some of the moments he shared with the KLHS community. Many thanks to Sandra for her efforts and for the pictures.

Chris visited several schools to speak with students in the Ferndale schools. He enjoyed all the events, but was especially pleased to know the alternative schools were invited to participate for the first time.

 
Chris Crutcher met with the students and staff of Fowlerville High School five months after WHALE TALK was banned.

Five months after the school board voted to restrict the use of WHALE TALK, five months after some of the students and staffers who loved the book defended it in public, Crutcher visited Fowlerville High School to thank them for being so brave. Of 650 students who attend, 640 were at school to celebrate the book and Chris.

Crutcher joined a number of other outstanding authors to make the 2004 Rabbit Hills Festival of Literature a glowing success. He spoke to high school and middle school students, he lectured to a general audience and he enjoyed the convent lodgings in Darien nearby. Librarian Gayle Lolley invited Crutcher to Topeka and had the determination to make it happen. Four high schools heard him speak at the Topeka Shawnee Public County Library and hundreds more saw him via video-streaming technology, thanks to the magic of Kan-Ed.

Bill Coolidge, one of Chris's Oakland students grew up to be a librarian and asked him to be a part of the ACL Conference with literacy expert Rodney Ferguson, booktalk queen Kathleen Baxter and illustrator Rick Spears. Three hundred Northern California librarians attended.

When Margaret Kendall of Arroyo High School wrote to Chris asking if he'd consider visiting her school, she had no idea he was booked to speak in San Leandro, just 8 miles from her home turf. Imagine her surprise when he said yes, he'd be glad to stop by. Thanks Margaret and AHS students. It was a great half day.

Get Lit! with Dave Barry

Chris was asked to open for humorist Dave Barry at the Get Lit! Festival in Spokane, Washington on April 18, 2004. People leaving the event said, "Who is this guy?  He's even funnier than Dave Barry." The bookseller sold out of KING OF THE MILD FRONTIER. Great afternoon!
